Laurel English, ABC, is a communications consultant and
principal of English Communications, where she provides
communication planning and public relations services for
many industries, including health care, pharmaceutical,
manufacturing, telecommunications and insurance. Past and
current clients include AT&T, Chevron Corporation,
Delta Dental of New Jersey, Engelhard Corporation, J.M.
Huber Corporation, Medco Health and Prudential. Before
starting English Communications in 1988, she worked in
the public relations departments at Bechtel Corporation
in San Francisco, and Magee-Womens Hospital in Pittsburgh.
Laurel holds an M.S. in Communications Management from Syracuse
University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications.
Her studies focused on using research to help plan and
measure effective public relations and marketing programs.
She also wrote a chapter on public relations research for
an upcoming textbook on public relations management. Her
capstone research project, "Tying Employee Communications
to Organizational Value: In Search of the "Missing
Links," looked at how employee communications impacts
the organization, and developed a method for measuring
its effect on organizational value.
Laurel has received awards from the International Association
of Business Communicators (IABC), American Cancer Society,
Society for Technical Communications, and the Hospital
Association of Pennsylvania. She served on the boards of
the San Francisco, Philadelphia and New Jersey chapters
of IABC. She is an accredited business communicator (ABC)
by IABC, and served on the international accreditation
board. She was named volunteer of the year by New Jersey
IABC in 2005.
